Schooners are typically 2-masted fore-and-aft rigged vessels with a foremast and a mainmast stepped nearly amidships. The after mast is always taller than the foremast.
When three masted the masts can be of varying heights but commonly they are very similar.
One of the first Schooners was built here in Gloucester Massachusetts in 1713. It was built by Andrew Robinson and legend has it that when it was first launched a spectator marveled at the way it skimmed across the water. "There she scoons" he called out. Scooning was a New England term for skimming across the water. At the time, a schooner was possibly the fastest thing anyone had ever seen.
